Brake pads must be replaced as a set

Preparing the car for work. We raise the car on a lift or hang the back of the car on a viewing hole.

If work is carried out on a viewing hole, then you need to substitute stops under the front wheels.

And if we hang out the back, we need to substitute a safety stand.

Remove the brake drum, for this:

With a thin screwdriver, turn the ratchet nut through the threaded hole in the drum to bring the pads together.

There is a ratchet nut with a left-hand thread on the left wheel.

There is a ratchet nut with a right-hand thread on the right wheel.

You need to consider when bringing the pads together.

After the pads have been brought together, use a slotted screwdriver to pry off and remove the hub bearing cover (Figure 2).

Using a 36 socket with an extension, unscrew the nut 1, Figure 1, fastening the brake drum to the axis 3 of the rear wheel hub.

Remove the drum.

Inspecting the brake drum. The inner diameter of the new drum is 228.5 mm.

Maximum allowable inside diameter of the brake drum is 229.5 mm.

If the inner diameter is larger than the maximum allowable, then the brake drum must be changed.

Replace brake drums as a set.

After the brake drum has been removed, do not press the brake pedal, the pistons may come out of the brake cylinder.

Use a thin screwdriver through the hole, pry and disengage the coupling spring

This operation must be performed very carefully.

You can also remove the spring with a pair of pliers.

Remove the spacer bar with the return spring

We assemble the rear wheel brake mechanism in reverse order.

Elements of the rear brake: 1 - spring for fastening the spacer bar; 2 - ratchet mechanism for automatic clearance adjustment; 3 - spacer bar with a gap adjustment mechanism; 4 - top return spring

Figure 14 shows the position of the rear brake elements with automatic clearance adjuster.

Tighten the wheel bearing nut to 175 Nm.

We replace the pads of the second side of the car in the same way.

Adjust the position of the brake pads as follows:

  • - press the brake pedal several times (you can press the brake pedal only with the brake drum installed);
  • - press and hold the brake pedal down;
  • - raise and lower the parking brake lever while pressing the button on the parking brake lever so that the ratchet does not work.

The rear wheel brakes will make a clicking sound from the automatic adjustment mechanism. The assistant should listen for these clicks.

Raise and lower the parking brake lever until the clicks stop. After that, we check the braking efficiency.

Can be adjusted without an assistant, given that the outer diameter of the pads should be 227.5±0.1 mm.

Turn the automatic adjustment ratchet with a screwdriver, adjust approximately this size, and install the brake drum.
