Removing the timing belt

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

Fig.1. Removal sequence for timing belt removal

Loosen the power steering pump bolts and nuts.

By turning the pump, loosen the power steering pump and A/C compressor drive belt.

KIA RIO Timing Belt Replacement

Remove the power steering pump and/or A/C compressor drive belt.

Loosen the alternator mounting bolts and the alternator drive belt tension adjusting bolt.

Remove the alternator mounting bolts.

Remove the water pump pulley.

Remove the bolts and remove the accessory drive pulley and toothed belt guide plate from the crankshaft.

Remove the bolts and remove the upper and lower toothed belt guards.

KIA RIO Timing Belt Replacement

Turn the crankshaft so that the alignment mark on the crankshaft timing belt pulley aligns with the pointer on the engine block.

Check that the I mark on the intake camshaft pulley aligns with the pointer on the cylinder head cover and the E mark on the exhaust camshaft pulley aligns with the pointer on the cylinder head cover.

After aligning the marks with the pointers, do not rotate the camshafts and crankshafts.

Loosen the bolt securing the toothed belt tensioner pulley.

Protect the toothed belt with a clean cloth.

Remove the tension roller.

Remove the timing belt from the engine.

Mark the direction of rotation of the toothed belt to reinstall it in its original position.

Check

Do not bend the toothed belt too much or change the direction of its rotation.

Do not allow oil and grease to come into contact with the toothed belt as this will cause it to break.

KIA RIO Timing Belt Replacement

Replace the timing belt if it is contaminated with oil or grease.

Check the toothed belt for damage, wear, splitting, cracks on the teeth and at the base of the teeth, as well as defects on the ends and back of the belt.

If there are defects, replace the toothed belt.

KIA RIO Timing Belt Replacement

Bend the toothed belt around a circle with a diameter of 25 mm and check for cracks and bundles on it

Rotate the roller of the toothed belt tensioner, check for jamming, smoothness and ease of rotation.

KIA RIO Timing Belt Replacement

Check the condition of the camshaft and crankshaft timing belt pulleys for wear and broken teeth. Replace pulleys if necessary.

Installation

A5D ENGINE

KIA RIO Timing Belt Replacement

Install the toothed belt tensioner.

When replacing the toothed belt, be sure to replace the spring of the toothed belt tensioner

Retract the toothed belt tensioner pulley to the maximum distance and fix it with a bolt in this position.

KIA RIO Timing Belt Replacement

Check that the mark on the crankshaft timing belt pulley is aligned on with a pointer on the cylinder block

KIA RIO Timing Belt Replacement

Check that the I mark on the intake camshaft pulley is aligned with the pointer on the cylinder head cover and the E mark on the exhaust camshaft pulley is aligned with the pointer on the cylinder head cover.

When reinstalling the toothed belt, install it in accordance with the marks previously made.

KIA RIO Timing Belt Replacement

Install the timing belt onto the crankshaft pulley, idler pulley, exhaust camshaft pulley, intake camshaft pulley and tensioner pulley.

Check that the timing belt is not slack in the branch between the tensioner pulley and the exhaust camshaft pulley or between the camshaft pulleys.

Loosen the bolt securing the toothed belt tensioner roller, as a result of which, under the action of the spring, the roller will turn and tension the toothed belt.

Do not retension the toothed belt

Tighten the toothed belt tensioner pulley bolt. Tightening torque: 38–51 Nm

Turn the engine crankshaft clockwise two full turns and align the mark on the crankshaft timing belt pulley with the pointer on the engine block.

Check that the I mark on the intake camshaft pulley and the E mark on the exhaust camshaft pulley are aligned with the pointers on the cylinder head cover.

If the marks are not aligned with the pointers, remove the toothed belt and repeat the installation steps.

KIA RIO Timing Belt Replacement

Check the toothed belt tension.

Press with a force of 10 kg on the middle of the toothed belt branch between the camshaft pulleys and measure the deflection of the toothed belt. Deflection: 11-13mm

Install the upper and lower toothed belt guards and secure them with bolts. Tightening torque: 7.9 - 10.7 Nm

Install the timing belt guide plate and the engine accessory drive crankshaft pulley and secure with bolts. Tightening torque: 12.3 - 17.2 Nm

Install the water pump pulley and secure with bolts. Tightening torque: 12.3 - 17.2 Nm

Install the alternator drive belt and adjust its tension.

Install the power steering pump and A/C compressor drive belt and adjust its tension.

Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal.

A3E ENGINE

Install the toothed belt tensioner.

When replacing the toothed belt, be sure to replace the spring of the toothed belt tensioner.

KIA RIO Timing Belt Replacement

Retract the toothed belt tensioner pulley to the maximum distance and fix it with a bolt in this position.

KIA RIO Timing Belt Replacement

Check that the mark on the crankshaft timing belt pulley is aligned with the pointer on the cylinder block.

KIA RIO Timing Belt Replacement

Check that the camshaft mark is aligned with the pointer on the cylinder head cover.

When reinstalling the toothed belt, install it in accordance with the marks previously made.

Install the toothed belt and check that there is no slack in the belt between the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys.

Loosen the bolt securing the toothed belt tensioner roller, as a result of which, under the action of the spring, the roller will turn and tension the toothed belt.

Do not retension the toothed belt.

Tighten the toothed belt tensioner pulley bolt.

Tightening torque: 18.6 - 25.5 Nm

Turn the engine crankshaft clockwise two full turns and align the mark on the crankshaft timing belt pulley with the pointer on the engine block.

Check that the mark on the camshaft pulley is aligned with the pointer on the cylinder head cover.
