The steering mechanism is removed for repair (we recommend that the mechanism be repaired in a specialized workshop) or replacement
The steering mechanism is mounted on the left side member from its inner side and fixed to the body side member with three bolts inserted from the inside.
You will need: keys "17", "19", a screwdriver.
We install the car on a lift or a viewing ditch
Drain the fluid from the power steering system (see "Replacing the Fluid in the Power Steering Hydraulic System").
We take out the bolt securing the tip of the lower cardan joint of the intermediate steering shaft to the shaft of the steering gear screw (see the article - How to remove the VAZ-2123 steering column)
Hang out the front part of the car and remove the left wheel.
We press out the ball pins of the middle and side rods from the holes of the bipod (article - Replacing the Niva Chevrolet steering rods), and take the side rod down
Using a 19-head, unscrew the bolt-fitting for fastening the high-pressure hose tip
And take out the bolt fitting
The tip is sealed on both sides with copper washers
Using a 22-head with an extension, unscrew the bolt-fitting that fastens the tip of the fluid supply hose to the radiator
And take out the bolt fitting
The connection is sealed with copper washers
With a 17 head, unscrew the nut of the bolt securing the steering gear housing to the left side member

Removing the bolt
In the same way, we take out the other two bolts securing the steering gear housing
On each bolt between the spar and the steering gear housing, one washer is installed (washers must be installed, otherwise the spar in this place may crack or fray)
Raising the steering mechanism, remove the ball pin of the middle tie rod from the hole in the bipod and remove the steering mechanism
A cutter is inserted into the hole located in the bulkhead, through which the propeller shaft passes New seal
Install the steering mechanism in the reverse order, without fully tightening the nuts of the crankcase mounting bolts.
We attach the middle and side tie rods to the bipod, and the steering screw shaft to the intermediate steering shaft.
The assistant turns the steering wheel two or three times to the right and left until it stops.
At the same time, we check the self-installation of steering units in regular places
Tighten the nuts of the steering gear bolts
Fastener tightening torques:
- - nut of the steering gear housing bolt 33.3-41.2 Nm;
- - nut of the ball pin of the steering rods 42.1-63 Nm;
- - bipod mounting nut 199.9-247 Nm
