The front axle of the Chevrolet Niva is a main gear and a differential installed in one crankcase

The differential, final drive gears and bearings of the front and rear axles are the same.

The front axle gear housing is cast, closed with covers at the front and bottom.

Reducer of the front axle of the car: 1 - mud deflector; 2 - lower cover of the gearbox housing; 3 - drive gear bearings; 4 - differential case; 5 - drain plug; 6 - plug of the filler and control holes; 7 - bearing of the body of the internal hinge; 9 - stuffing box; 9 - housing of the inner hinge of the wheel drive; 10 - spring washer; 11 - retaining ring; 12 - bearing cover; 13 - adjusting nut; 14 - differential box bearing; 15 - bearing cover; 16 - cover fastening bolt; 17 - support washer; 19 - satellite; 19 - gear of semiaxes; 20 - gearbox housing; 21 - breather; 22 - bearing cover of the inner hinge; 23 - axis of the satellites; 24 - adjusting ring; 25 - drive gear; 26 - bearing spacer; 27 - drive gear oil seal; 28 - flange

Crankcase covers are sealed with gaskets.

The front axle of the car includes: crankcase, final drive, differential and front wheel drive.

The front axle housing is made in the form of a one-piece body with a developed middle part. It is cast iron.

Lids are attached to the middle of the case.

On the sides of the housing there are special flanges for installing the bearing caps of the housings of the internal wheel drive joints, as well as for the front axle mounting brackets.

The main gear and differential are located inside the front axle housing.

The main gear and differential of the front axle have the same device as the rear axle, and their parts are unified.

Splined side gears are connected to the housings of the internal hinges of the front wheel drives.

Each of the two housings rests on a single-row ball bearing mounted in the gearbox housing.

The bearings are closed with covers fixed on three studs and sealed with cardboard spacers.

Together with the right cover, the front axle bracket is attached to the gearbox. A breather is pressed into the upper right part of the gearbox housing.

Possible malfunctions of the front axle, their causes and solutions

Cause of failure

Remedy

Constant increased noise during operation of the front axle

- Worn or incorrectly adjusted differential bearings

Replace worn parts, adjust differential bearings

- Incorrect adjustment, damage or wear of gears or gearbox bearings

Find gearbox failure, repair or replace gearbox

- Insufficient amount of oil in the axle housing

Restore the oil level, check for oil leakage from the front axle housing seals

- Wear or destruction of the inner joint housing bearing

Replace bearing

Noise during car acceleration and engine braking

- Incorrect adjustment of the main gear engagement

Adjust the engagement

- Incorrect lateral clearance in the meshing of the final drive gears

Adjust gap

- Increased clearance in the drive gear bearings due to loosening of the flange mounting nut or wear of the bearings

Adjust clearance, replace bearings if necessary

Knocking at the beginning of the car

- Wear of the hole for the axis of the satellites in the differential box

Replace the differential case and, if necessary, the pinion shaft

Oil leak

- Worn or damaged oil seal

Replace the oil seal

- Deterioration of the oil seal of the inner joint housing

Replace the oil seal

- Loose fastening of the bearing cover of the housings of the internal hinges or crankcase covers, damage to the gaskets

Tighten nuts and bolts, replace gaskets
