The brake drum is removed to replace it if the working surface is damaged or worn (the maximum allowable diameter of the drum of a car with a 1.4 liter engine is 181.25 mm, with a 1.6 liter engine - 204.45 mm), as well as for control state of brake mechanisms, replacement of brake pads and working cylinders
Perform work on a car with the rear wheels hung out (on a lift or a car installed with a jack on supports).
The parking brake lever must be fully depressed (vehicle disengaged).
You will need: a wrench for wheel bolts, a 30 socket, a mounting blade (two), a caliper.
Shift into 1st gear and place the stop bars under the front wheels.
Remove the rear wheel trim
Using a thin chisel and a hammer, carefully press the protective cap out of the hub and remove it.
Loosen the hub nut and wheel bolts.
Hang out the rear wheel and place the rear of the car on the side of the drum being removed on a support.
Remove the rear wheel.
Make sure the parking brake lever is set all the way down (vehicle disengaged).
Unscrew the rear hub nut and remove the brake drum together with the bearing from the hub trunnion.
Do not reuse the hub nut.
The brake drum is made in one piece with the rear hub.
Measure the diameter of the working surface with a caliper.
If the diameter exceeds the maximum allowable, the drum must be replaced.
Check the hub bearing for ease of rotation and play. Replace the bearing if necessary.
Similarly, remove and check the right brake drum.
When installing the old drum, use a file to remove the shoulder on the working surface of the drum, formed as a result of wear.
Reset the gap adjuster.
Combine the brake pads with two mounting spatulas.
Install the drum in the reverse order of removal.
Finally tighten the hub nut to 175 Nm (17.5 kgf-m).
Adjust the gap between the brake shoes and the drum by pressing the brake pedal 10-15 times.
You should hear the knob click each time you press it.
Once the clicking stops, the gap is set.
Press the protective cap into the hub.
Install the wheel and the decorative cap.
Check the wheel for ease of rotation. It is allowed to easily touch the drum on the pads.
Replace brake drums in pairs (left and right at the same time).
Do not press the bearing out of the brake drum unless absolutely necessary.
A dismantled bearing cannot be reused.
It is forbidden to move the car with the hub nut loose, as this will damage the bearing separator
